Applied Behaviour Analysis – ABA Therapy
1to1 Autism Therapy’s Behaviour Therapists use Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to assist children and youth in developing skills in the areas of: communication, expressive language, receptive language, imitation, social skills, play skills, joint attention, self-help skills, personal independence, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and behaviour. Behaviour Therapists incorporate the child’s motivation and interests to build new skills and address challenging behaviours.
1to1 Autism Therapy meets the criteria to provide ABA services through the Ontario Autism Program.
What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?
What ABA Interventions are offered at 1to1 Autism Therapy?
1to1 Autism Therapy provides focused ABA interventions to address specific skill deficits. When starting therapy, the parent will select one or more behavioural goals that can be addressed within a 12-week cycle of therapy. Therapy will be provided in a minimum of 6 hours per week of intervention.
1to1 Autism Therapy’s Behaviour Therapists use Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to teach children and youth the following skills:
- Social skills
- Joint attention
- Fine motor skills
- Gross motor skills
- Personal independence including feeding, dressing and toileting
ABA strategies are also applied to treat challenging behaviours. Behaviour Therapists incorporate the child’s motivation and interests to build new skills and address various behaviours.
What specialized skills do 1to1 Autism Therapy therapists have?
1to1 Autism Therapy’s ABA team use evidence-based treatment approaches to build functional skills and decrease challenging behaviours. Our therapists are trained to:
- Conduct Functional Behavioural Assessments
- Complete skill-based assessments
- Build cooperation and learner readiness skills
- Teach Augmentative Communication such as PECS, Proloquo2Go and LAMP
- Teach adaptive and functional behaviours that replace challenging behaviours
- Provide individualized treatment that incorporates the child or youth’s motivation and interests to create a positive therapeutic environment
- Increase independence across self-care, communication, play and social interaction skills
ABA can be provided to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder through direct intervention, consultation and parent training.
How long is an ABA direct therapy clinical cycle?
Each cycle of direct focused ABA therapy is 12 weeks in length with a minimum of 6 hours per week of intervention directly with the child and family. Families can complete clinical cycles back to back or take a break between cycles for home-based programming.
What is the parents’ role?
A distinctive aspect of the 1to1 Autism Therapy’s model is the recognition that parents and other caregivers are integral parts of their child’s intervention team. As such, at 1to1 we welcome parents and caregivers to learn ABA strategies and be active participants in their child’s therapy.
Who is on the ABA team?
The Supervising Therapist (ST) is responsible for completing the assessment and writing the individual program plan for each child with consultation from the parent. Instructor Therapists are highly skilled behavioural therapists who have ABA training and implement the program on a daily basis. The Supervising Therapist observes, coaches and gives feedback and suggestions to the Instructor Therapists.
How much does the ABA program cost?
In order to meet the needs and schedule of your family, an individualized therapy program will be designed in our autism treatment centre, or at your home, daycare or private school. All programs require parent or caregiver involvement to carryover the therapy goals outside of direct 1to1 therapy time. Customized focused ABA programs cost $55 per hour. A 12-week commitment is required.
Recommendation for use of Ontario Autism Program Funding for children over 6 years of age:
Within a $5,000 Ontario Autism Program budget, treatment to address a specific behaviour can be provided by completing a 12-week intensive cycle of focused ABA therapy. Therapy programs will be customized to the needs of the child and family.
