Early Start Denver Model
Give your child an “Early Start” in 1to1 Autism Therapy’s Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) Program.
Is your child under 4 years of age and has been diagnosed or suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder?
If so, there is an evidence based early intervention called Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) that can help your child learn to communicate, play and interact with you. ESDM was developed at the UC Davis MIND institute by Sally Rogers, PhD., and Geraldine Dawson, PhD.
1to1 Autism Therapy has developed a comprehensive Early Start therapy program based on the Early Start Denver Model research, curriculum and parent training for your child from 12 months to four years of age. Our unique, naturalistic, play based Early Start program is designed to include direct 1to1 therapy and parent training. Therapy occurs in the child’s natural environment at home, daycare or private school.
1to1 Autism Therapy’s comprehensive ESDM intervention program qualifies for funding from the Ontario Autism Program, is supervised by qualified Clinical Supervisors and all therapists are trained directly in Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) by trainers from UC Davis MIND institute.
What is Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)?
Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a comprehensive, behavioral early intervention program for young children with or suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder. Children receiving ESDM are typically between 12-48 months of age.
ESDM teaches children the following skills:
- Social skills
- Joint Attention
- Play skills
- Gross and fine motor skills
- Personal independence skills are also targeted
The ESDM model includes a Curriculum Assessment that clinicians use to assess the child’s current performance in a variety of developmental domains. The results of this assessment are used to create an individualized program for each child that incorporates goals from each domain.
There are four levels in the ESDM program. Each level corresponds roughly to a developmental period. Level 1 (12 – 18 months), Level 2 (18 – 24 months), Level 3 (24 – 36 months) and Level 4 (36 – 48 months). All programs and goals are individualized to the child and family.
What does an Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) direct therapy session look like?
An ESDM session should look like play. Together, the child and therapist engage in fun, age-appropriate activities that help facilitate communication and social interactions. In any ESDM interaction, the child and adult are both important and active participants. Both partners offer ideas, take turns and share the responsibility for initiating, playing and ending activities.
In order to make sessions fun and engaging, and to maintain the child’s motivation, the therapist will prepare the environment with a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that are specifically selected with each child’s interests, preferences and goals in mind.
ESDM sessions can take place in any environment that is part of the child’s daily life including the home, daycare or private school. Any adult who spends time with the child can use ESDM strategies to make everyday activities, such as meal time and bath time, an opportunity for interaction and learning.
How long is an ESDM direct therapy clinical cycle?
The Early Start program is inclusive of parent training and direct 1to1 therapy based on the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) curriculum. Each cycle of the program is 12 weeks in length with 6 to 10 hours per week of intervention directly with the child and family. Families can complete clinical cycles back to back or take a break between cycles for home-based programming.
What is the parents’ role?
A distinctive aspect of the ESDM model is the recognition that parents and other caregivers are integral parts of their child’s intervention team. As such, at 1to1 Autism Therapy, we welcome parents and caregivers to learn strategies in the Early Start Parent Program and be active participants in their child’s ESDM sessions.
Who is on the ESDM team?
1to1 Autism Therapy’s Clinical Team is made up of the Supervising Therapist (ST) who is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst or Speech-Language Pathologist with advanced training in ESDM and Instructor Therapists (IT) with training in ESDM who delivers the 1to1 therapy.
The Supervising Therapist is responsible for completing the ESDM curriculum assessment and writing the individual program plan for each child. Instructor Therapists are highly skilled therapists who have been trained in ESDM strategies and who implement the program on a daily basis. The Supervising Therapist observes, coaches and gives feedback and suggestions to the Instructor Therapists.
How much does the ESDM direct therapy program cost?
In order to meet the needs and schedule of your family, there is a full time and part time program option available. All programs require parent or caregiver involvement to carryover the therapy goals outside of direct 1to1 therapy time. A 12-week commitment is required.
Within a $20,000 Ontario Autism Program budget, treatment can continue throughout the year in cycles of 12 weeks of 6 to 10 hours of therapy per week.
